Hindu Kush Mountains
of Pakistan hit by an earth quake which had a magnitude of 7.6 on
Sunday, October 9, 2005, sending tremors across South Asia. The
worst ever earth quake witness by Pakistan.
The origin of
earth quake was 80 km (50 miles) E of Mingaora (Pakistan), 130 km
(80 miles) N of ISLAMABAD (Pakistan), 155 km (95 miles) SW of Gilgit
(Pakistan), Kashmir (Pakistan) 160 km (100 miles) SE of Chitral
(Pakistan).
The depth of
Earth quake in Pakistan was 10.0 kilometers.
According to
media reports, more than 30,000 people died in Kashmir (Pakistan)
alone during Saturday’s earthquake and 42,397 people had been
injured. 16 army personnel were killed in a bunker collapse in Uri
sector of Kupwara. 200 soldiers of Pakistan army were killed on
duty.
Officials said
Balakot (Pakistan), a village of about 30,000, was one of the hardest-hit
areas. At least 250 pupils were feared trapped inside the rubble
of the four-story school, and at least a dozen bodies were strewn
on the streets.
Aftershocks
rattled the region for hours afterwards, and hospitals moved earth
quake victims onto lawns, fearing tremors could cause more damage.
The US Geological
Survey reported 22 aftershocks in the 24 hours after the quake,
including a 6.2-magnitude temblor.
Interior Minister
Aftab Sherpao said that "around 11,000 of the dead were in
Muzaffarabad (Pakistan)." This report was previously attributed
to CNN, which "has not confirmed that figure."
Minister Tariq
Farooq said that more than 30,000 people have died in Kashmir (Pakistan).
He also added that "There are cities; there are towns which
have been completely destroyed. Muzaffarabad (Pakistan) is devastated,"
Chief military
spokesman Major-General Shaukat Sultan said: "We are handling
the worst disaster in Pakistan’s history."
Muzaffarabad
(Pakistan) the hardest hit area, earth quake left nothing just tears
in the eyes, nothing left, and the village turns into to plain land.
Rescuer’s tried to approach Muzaffarabad from three different
directions but have failed. All roads have been blocked by landslides.
The roads are damaged and it is impossible to approach Muzaffarabad
from any direction. The only way to approach to reach the area is
helicopters but nothing arrived yet.
Injured people
covered by shawls lay in the street, waiting for medical care. Residents
carried bodies on wooden planks. The bodies of four children, aged
between four and six years old, lay under a sheet of corrugated
iron. The situation is worse and they all need help, but didn’t
reached yet, the rescuer works and villagers are trying to clear
the road that is blocked by land slides but it will take time.
Some victims
have lamented the lack of help from the government, as winter is
approaching and the people don’t have shelter or blankets,
the situation is miserable.
Help victims
